When it comes to public transportation lots of tests and measurements are required to ensure safety and passenger comfort. The trains for example require many measurements during development phase, first measurements when they come in operation and repetitive measurements for determining the quality of the tracks. High number of channels distributed over the long vehicles can be easily achieved with the use of DEWESoft NET - networked data acquisition solution.

Typical tests - current collector performance

Above - current collector shoe tests, third rail 600-700 VDC

Above - current collector pantograph tests, 25,000 VAC

Above - high speed train tests in Europe

In the actual test results above, you can see that we used a DEWE-CAM-01 to record a view of the current collector shoe riding along the third rail of a train car in New York city. In this test, we also used a second camera to watch the driver’s screen, which shows the voltage on the third rail. Accelerometers were mounted near the shoe to record Z and X axis acceleration. A string pot was used to record the vertical displacement of the primary axle during all test runs. An AC/DC current clamp was mounted under the car to record the current that the shoe passed. Finally, we used our DEWE-VGPS-200 to record and display precise SPEED, POSITION, DISTANCE, and more!

Above, from left to right:
1 - DEWE-CAM-01 mounted in a protective metal box, mounted on the side of the train just in front of the current collor shoe
2 - A NEMA 4 string pot was mounted just above the primary axle to record vertical displacement
3 - Hall Effect current clamp under the the train, recording the current

after the test
After the test runs, engineers from the transit company and key contractors review the test data right on the Dewetron system. Data can be replayed like a movie. In addition, you can zoom in/out, take measurements with on-screen cursors, make printouts on the spot, export to other file formats, and much more.

Applications that will get you moving
From New York subway to crash testing of high speed trains in Europe, we provide solutions in this area. Here are some popular applications and the Dewetron instruments that make them possible:

train1
Inspection and performance testing
To determine the highest speed of the trains the measurement of acceleration of the trains and the propulsion system must be performed to calculate the derailment index. Not only can we calculate results in real time, and make easy reports within moments of the test run -- but we can also acquire GPS data to determine where the section with potential problems is and video data to SEE the train as it drives along the track. Dewetron systems are in heavy use all over the USA from our epicenter in New York city, where Kawasaki, Alstom, and Bombardier all use them for all manner of testing, trouble-shooting, and new car inspection applications.

Recommended models:
  • DEWE-3031 (aka DA-121, DA-124) battery powered data acquisition system, 16 - 64 channels + CAN bus + video
  • DEWE-101 for low channel count applications with CAN bus inputs

Passenger comfort
Passenger comfort is one of the numerous tests performed on the public transportation. With the measurement of vibration, the ride comfort index is calculated to determine how good the vehicle and the track perform. The systems are used not only for a single decision pass/fail criteria, but also for determining the cause of the higher values and providing the ways to analyze the possible solutions. Dewetron systems make it easier than ever before to conduct real objective tests on key passenger comfort criteria, and to make reports and analyses. Get your work done fast and accurately with Dewetron.

Recommended models:
  • DEWE-3031 (aka DA-121, DA-124) battery powered data acquisition system, 16 - 64 channels + CAN bus + video
  • DEWE-101 for low channel count applications with CAN bus inputs

Ride testing
Dewetron hardware and DEWESoft software is not only fun to work with, but it plays a major role in fun applications. The software with the support of gyro platforms from XSens and Genesys in combination with video data offers great base for analyzing amusement park ride tests. The new rides must be checked for safety as well as the passenger comfort that people don't become sick while having fun at the amusement parks. Dewetron systems have been involved with major parks such as Disney World and Universal Studios, and in fact, this application is the main reason that Dewetron USA developed the SideHAND battery power system in 2004!

Recommended models:
  • DEWE-3143 battery powered data acquisition system, 8 channels + CAN bus + video
  • DEWE-101 portable DC powered acquisition system

Component/power testing
Since transportation is very similar to automotive, virtually the same rules apply to testing components in transportation application area. There are lots of components in the power system which require all manner of testing... from current collectors on the third rail, to pantographs testing AC power on the catenary system, to diesel engines, air conditioning units, brakes, axles, and much more. Today’s modern trains incorporate the CAN bus as well, which is perfect for Dewetron, since we were the first data acquisition systems to have synchronous CAN and ANALOG data, plus VIDEO, in a portable recording system.

Recommended models:
  • DEWE-3200 with DAQ ISOLATION modules for POWER applications + GPS + VIDEO (battery-powered)
  • DEWE-2600 with DAQ ISOLATION modules for POWER applications + GPS + VIDEO (AC/DC powered)
