Energy / Power Applications

top
Few technologies affect our daily lives more than energy. We expect power to be there when we turn the lights on, or start the car, or operate any machine. Reliable power is no accident, however. There are numerous systems involved in the generation, transmission and processing of energy, and Dewetron instruments are involved in monitoring, testing and improving all of them.

Power Troubleshooting

apps_energy_icons_trouble
We know that every power plant, substation, or energy development company needs a data recorder at times. There are all kinds of troubleshooting needs that come up all the time, and you need an instrument which:
  • Is easy to learn to use
  • Has high isolation inputs
  • Can handle hundreds of volts directly
  • Works with current clamps and flex coils easily
  • Has flexible TRIGGERING capabilities
  • Is easy to move around and use anywhere

Rod Drop Tests in Nuclear Plants

apps_energy_icons_rod
Control rods must be dropped automatically to contain the nuclear reaction in plants should anything go awry. It is mission critical therefore that they are tested on a regular basis to make sure that they will deploy if needed. Rod drop testing requires a recorder/display unit with lots of channels - anywhere from 32 to 64 sensors will be measured during the tests. Here are the key criteria related to this application:
  • Large channel counts - anywhere from 32 to 64 analog inputs
  • Ability to handle several different kinds of sensors
  • Can record VIDEO in sync with the data
  • Easy to use software

Wind Turbine Testing

apps_energy_icons_wind
Wind turbine testing is a unique and emerging application within the power spectrum. All important power output parameters need to be monitoring in accordance with norms as well as your own expectations, and there is the whole electro-mechanical side of the system to be considered as well. Here are some common criteria related to this application:
  • Very small form factor is needed due to the environment
  • High isolation inputs
  • Networkability (ethernet for remote access)
  • Full 3-phase analysis at a variable base frequency
  • Wide temperature operating range

Electrical Power Monitoring

apps_energy_icons_EP
A relatively new concept, “Electrical Power” instruments can display and analyze BOTH the electrical side of a system AND the physical measurement side simultaneously, in one system. Imagine an elevator, as one example, with its power system PLUS vibration and all kinds of mechanical parameters, which are deeply interconnected! Or a wind turbine, or any large machine. Electrical power monitoring means that you can measure both the power and the physical parameters in one system. Key requirements:
  • High isolation inputs
  • Measure all physical properties in perfect sync with the power properties
  • Can record VIDEO in sync with the data
  • Portable and desktop form factors

Power Network Analysis

Power network analysis means that you need to look very deeply into the key parameters of your power network, and all of its parameters. These include harmonics, subharmonics, active power, apparent power, and much more. Instruments which can handle this application need to have at least these characteristics:
  • High isolation inputs
  • Full 3-phase analysis up to 800 Hz base frequency
  • Ruggedized field and/or panel mount form factors
  • Networkability, with database interfaces for wide scale recording and event logging

Flexible Power Fault Recording

apps_energy_icons_PFR
Substation technicians and engineers rely on power fault recorders for accurate voltage and current monitoring. Similar to power network/power quality analysis, except geared more to the distribution side, with more inputs capable of handling multiple bus bars in one system. Here are some key criteria for this application:
  • Networkable - connect PFRs anywhere and everywhere
  • High isolation voltage and current inputs
  • Database engine for distributed systems and event logging
  • Full 3-phase analysis up to 800 Hz base frequency
  • Rack-mounting and robust construction

Hybrid Vehicle Power Test

apps_energy_icons_hybrid
One of the newest and fastest growing power applications is the testing of hybrid vehicle energy systems. It is critical therefore that your data acquisition can do a great job but draw NOTHING from the vehicle’s power bus, so systems with their own on-board batteries are highly desireable. Here are the key criteria related to this application:
  • Self-powered for hours via on-board batteries (no load on the car)
  • Isolated inputs, and isolated DC power when powered from the car
  • Ability to measure the rest of the propulsion system as well form any sensor
  • CAN BUS interfaces for direct reading of vehicle parameters
  • Video interface for synchronous video recording
  • Easy to use software
